More from Kent

Another day in Kent with Laura and Barry. To get Laura's wedding dress fitted, we visited a dress shop in Gillingham. What a mess the Medway towns are in. I can't recall ever visiting such a depressed and depressing area. I presume that once they were properous when the military was the major employer in the area. But now - a pretty miserable looking spectacle. It's a shame as there were pockets of interesting architectural features which gave glimpses of a past that was obvioulsy better than the present. If the residents are expecting an massive injection of redevelopment cash from this current government, I fear they are going to be disappointed.
In the afternoon we visited a town at the diametrically opposite end of the social scale, Tunbridge Wells. Here money dripped from the cars and the high-end shops! On the surface, a place that will weather the financial storms far better than the Medway towns. But neither of them are Cornwall and I'll be glad to be motoring down the A303 tomorrow.
